Update, November 6: Nike GB and Nike Spain now list the “Subway Rat” for Friday, November 20.
The College Grey and Pink Glaze Air Force 1 ’01, nicknamed the “Subway Rat”, released on SNKRS on Wednesday, October 7, at $150. It’s a New York shoe through and through, and a stranger one than the usual city-themed pair.
For the subway’s other commuters
Nike says it outright. Its listing ties the hairy grey suede, pink outsole and pink details to “the non-human commuters scurrying through the subway tunnels on their own daily transit”.
The upper is a long-pile grey suede that reads more like fur than nap. Pink Glaze picks out the extended heel pull and the translucent outsole. Pink spare laces come in the box alongside the tonal grey set. Sneaker Files lists more jokes in the details: a rat’s-tail heel tab, insoles that form a pizza slice side by side and a MetroCard-style hangtag; Nike’s page doesn’t mention them.
The base is the ’01, Nike’s slimmer-toed, thicker-leather take on the Air Force 1, which it calls the silhouette’s gold standard.
Can you still get a pair?
Yes, at retail. It’s on Nike’s SNKRS listing at $150. Nike GB and Nike Spain now list it too, first come, first served on Friday, November 20, six weeks after the US.
How it went
It didn’t sell out. On November 2, nearly four weeks after the drop, Nike’s US stock still had all 17 sizes, 12 of them deep. Our hype score of 49 was an estimate built on allocation and channel, and the stock says it was generous. More Nike drops on our Nike page.
